Light Stealer is a novella
written especially for PS Publishing and can be quite hard
to get hold of. It centres around Septern and his creation
of DawnThief. At first it seems a little confusing, mainly
containing information on the spell and not much else. This
frustrated me at first, but on reading realised its very much
like Septern himself, frantic and not revelaing much.
I found it takes a little bit of thought
to really get into Light Stealer, and being short the start
seems rushed. The book is not for those who are after action,
it tells the story from Septern and his students point of
view. We know there is a war going on outside but other than
that not much, it really shows the isolation of Septern.
When Septern starts to realise that people
want the spell the story does come together and I found the
second half of the story much more enjoyable. The outside
world really does cave in on Septern and his students.
The end of the book is a piece of real genius,
I did not see the twist coming. Its well worth reading but
could have been a full novel in his own right. The novella
status does hamper the story and you need some knowledge of
Dawnthief to fully understand. Its still a great piece of
writing by Barclay and well worth a read.
